Only the Educated are Free

Thoughts on Education, Technology, and the Future of America

Your Host

My primary motivation for entering the education field was a mixture of my love of literature and learning and my desire to make a difference in my community. I was lucky enough to have enjoyed a very good education and many of the teachers I met over the years inspired me to bring that same experience to future generations.

Outside of the classroom my life is dominated by reading, writing, and the Yankees (and not necessarily in that order). I am currently writing my Masters thesis on power and corruption in the medieval church and its influence on literature and the arts. While I am completing a Liberal Arts degree to satisfy the conditions of my certification, I plan on pursuing a PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Virginia once I move there later this year. My other literary interests range from Doestoevsky and Nabokov to Shakespeare, Joyce and Orwell. I do not own a television so I spend most of my free time reading, writing, taking photos, out enjoying nature or at Yankee Stadium cheering on the best team in baseball!

My fiance is in the military and recently took a job as a civilian Marine at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia, which is why I’ll be moving there this summer after we get married. While I will miss New York (and especially the Yankees), I am looking forward to our new life in Virginia. I can’t see myself ever not taking classes or educating myself in some way and I look forward to the new experiences our move to Virginia will open up for me.

I am considering teaching at the university level eventually, even if it is as an adjunct. While I love my current career choice, I do not see myself doing this forever. I would either like to become a professor or write full time, but I understand the difficulties of both of those options so I will see where life takes me.

I always appreciate feedback. Please email me comments, questions, observations, etc.

    Greetings.
I found this site via your other blog. This is indeed very different–and a very attractive one.
I look forward to returning and posting comments on actual posts instead of your bio.
Very best of luck this semester and, especially, at Virginia.

Hey, Good Luck with your job search. I’m sure you will find something good soon. I like the fact that you are enspired to share your education experiences with others rather than getting into teaching for the “Free Time”.
